From Elicitation to Emotional Response: Neural Mechanisms of Patterning and System Synchronization

grandjean_c_0.png

The emphasis of the project “Neural mechanisms of emotional response patterning and system synchronization” is on

  1. The nature and patterning of the responses in different components of emotion
  2. The interrelations between emotional components
  3. Emotion regulation

To investigate the neuronal mechanisms which underlie the emergence of feelings and their regulation, we induce emotional reactions with different stimuli, such as voices, pictures, movies, avatars, and games.

Our research addresses several questions within the theoretical framework of the Component Process Model (CPM):

  1. What is the dynamic of brain activity and peripheral physiology during emotion recognition and during the emergence of an emotional experience?
  2. What are the mechanisms of emotion regulation?

The investigation of the dynamics of neuronal activities between different brain areas is crucial to better understand how different neuronal populations interact. This neural interaction allows humans to feel and represent their own emotions. How are body symptoms implicated and represented when feelings emerge? How are humans able to modify their emotions and feelings in the context of emotion regulation? To address these questions, we use different behavioural and brain imaging methods, including functional magnetic resonance imaging, electroencephalography, and intracranial recordings. We often assess neuronal activities together with peripheral measures in order to understand their relationship in the context of emotional processes.

We develop several applications in clinical contexts, particularly regarding neurologic and neuropsychiatric disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease or autism.
